![]() There is a lot of talk of the Devil and superstitions and there are also a great many feasts for saints, whom Birdy makes fun of in her journal. In fact, the bad morals rest not only on Birdy, but on almost all the characters in the tale.Īgain, Birdy attempts to curse someone (her plan, at least from her perspective, backfires). She then tries to curse her uncle so that he does not marry her best friend. She also sneaks away from her work and considers running away at one point. Admittedly, many of her antics are funny (especially from the standpoint of the 21st Century, where being forced to marry is almost unheard-of in the Western world) still, for the time in which the story is set, Birdy is exceptionally spirited and careless of her father's wishes. Birdy is rebellious, impish, saucy, and speaks ill of almost everyone around her. ![]() ![]() But, since she has to keep an account of her life, she feels she might as well put it to good use, and from there on she begins a tirade about life in Medieval Europe, about her longing for freedom, and about her various ways of getting rid of unwanted suitors. Amusing in some places, but also needlessly crude some sexual content and poor morals.Ĭatherine, called Birdy, didn't start a diary because she wanted to her family demanded that she do so. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tonight at Angel Orensanz the Metropolis Ensemble opens its second season with David Schiff's All About Love- "a panoramic meditation on love as expressed in different times and My concertgoing for the remainder of the week is taken up with Steve Reich events - the Young Artists Concert tonight, the grand concert on Saturday, Discovery Day and the Daniel Variations premiere on Sunday - and I'll have to miss other things that look distinctly promising. The surprise for me was to come across "God's Country," which Didion published in the New York Review of Books in October 2000. The book contains, as no one needs to be told, some of the finest modern prose in the English language, and I'm relieved to put into storage those ratty, chewed-up, used-bookstore paperbacks in which I've read Didion's masterpieces in the past. ![]() I dropped by 192 Books, my neighborhood bookstore, to find something to read in between endless rewritings of my book draft, and I came away with We Tell Ourselves Stories In Order To Live, the Everyman's Library of Joan Didion's nonfiction work. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Raised by progressively-minded atheists, Undset realized while still a teenager that ideologies and their accompanying “isms” gave inadequate measures of the world and humanity, always narrowing truth precisely at the point where what is required is a broadness of understanding and the oxymoronic-sounding “bold nuance” of genuinely small-c catholic thinking. This last is something akin to what Saint Catherine of Siena referred to as the inner cell or the “cell of true self-knowledge.” Undset, like Catherine a Third Order Dominican, shared with that clear-eyed Doctor an impatience with the sort of illusions bred by social conventions and encouraged by trends. It is a title evocative of the life of faith, wholly explored and lived-out-unpacked depot by depot, as it were-from the spiritual nursery, to precarious venturing forth, to stepping back in wonder or doubt, to the nearly inevitable and deepening darkness that, for all its pain, accesses an interior cave of Oneness, solitary yet completed in the companionship of the Christ. Nearly a century has passed since Sigrid Undset wrote the biographical essays about holy men and women, and the letters, which eventually would be collected and published under the heading Stages on the Road. ![]() ![]() The story of Wolf 42 and Wolf 21 is a remarkable work of science writing, offering unparalleled insight into wolf behaviour and Yellowstone's famed wolf reintroduction project. ![]() Renowned wolf expert and Yellowstone's first-ever wolf interpreter Rick McIntyre recounts their fascinating lives with compassion and a keen eye for detail, drawing on his more than twenty-five years of experience observing Yellowstone wolves in the wild.
